The Differing Types of Bed Frames

A bed frame serves not only as the support base of a mattress, but also as the main statement made by the bed itself! Frames come in a variety of styles and sizes and can reflect just about any design choice. If you don't know your metal frames from adjustable or platform frames, then read on!

Adjustable Bed Frame

Metal frames are the most common type of frame. They are used in traditional settings and have attachments for headboards and footboards. The cost of one of these styles is affordable and can be purchased from furniture stores and retail locations. Wheels are generally affixed to the feet of metal bed frames to allow for easy movement. A box spring is required underneath the mattress to provide height and additional support.

Platform frames are suitable for contemporary style bedrooms. The mattress is held up by a platform base and does not require a box spring. Most platform frames are made of wood or wooden like materials. Waterbeds are an example of this type of bed. Additional features may include built-in drawers or storage areas underneath the platform.

Wooden frames are more substantial in weight and may be more difficult to move around. A headboard and footboard can also be used with this type. Typically, a thinner piece of wood is laid between the box spring and the frame to prevent movement of the mattress set.

Adjustable bed frames are like those used in hospitals that will allow the sleeper to raise and lower the foot and head of the bed to suit his or her own needs. These types are usually more expensive than the other frames because adjustable ones require a special kind of mattress.

Bunk beds are used to save space and allow room for several sleepers. These can be made of metal or wood materials and vary in size and styles. Traditional bunk beds are composed of two twin beds, one above another. Many today consist of a twin bed on top and a full size bed frame on the bottom. Some bunk beds even have a regular bed frame above and a framed out desk area below.

Trundle bed frames are another option for multiple sleepers and is a similar choice to bunks. It consists of a regular twin size bed frame with a pull out twin size bed underneath. The second bed is able to slide in and out for easy storage and offers more space when not in use.

So now you are a bed frame connoisseur, you can find the best frame for your needs!
